PostSubject: Missionare - 1969 Early/Low Light RHD T2a Bay Window Walkthrough Microbus   Fri May 31, 2013 1:17 pm

First topic message reminder :

Latest addition to my pool of Aircooled VWs:

Matching Numbers All Around;
Current Missionary School Van;
November 1968 (Model year: 1969) Early RHD T2 Bay Window Walkthrough Microbus with Sliding Door on Left.
1600cc M-240 (Low Compression) 44BHP Matching Motor

Needs a ground up restoration but worth every penny its bought for.

Bought it for a Polish friend's Tour of Pakistan! The Polish friend named it as "Missionare" (German: means Messenger) for its life long service to humanity.

This is tell tale of Missionare's acquisition, 700KM journey back home and the restoration. Stay tuned as we embark on an exciting ride deep into the Early Bay world to explore what it is like to restore a half living auto-marvel from the past.

DISCLAIMER: The thread would be creepy slow as I have two other projects running in parallel to this (a 65 Bug & a 79 Safari), so plz be patient but be assured that it would be another restoration cookbook, though this time on the subject of Early Bays.

PostSubject: NOS Sliding Door Latch Spring   Thu Oct 31, 2013 2:51 pm

This little fella here is really hard to find on its own.

It gives tension to the latch holder to keep the sliding door locked open once its opened up and goes on this latch here which goes onto the body:

Here is how it looks once its complete:

Eventually got myself a NOS one in Netherlands with Jeffrey and would soon be on its way to complete the Sliding Door mechanisms/restoration on Missionare.

PostSubject: Unpacking the Missionare Bits   Mon Nov 04, 2013 10:31 am

As have been shared, the Missionare bits had been waiting to be unpacked since their arrival since working days didn't left much time for me to unpack. Yesterday being a sunday was a good opportunity to finish the job and sort the items out.

When it all started it looked a big mess;

And slowly all the good things were unwrapped/unpacked and there were few surprises in there, almost all of them being "good". For instance these front walkthrough OG Trim seats which looked super clean just a bit dirty and thats all. No rips nothing. All knobs and hooks and frames/springs everything is in perfect shape.

With these on Missionare, helped by the previously arrived walkthrough bulkhead from USA, Missionare is once again a walkthrough after donkey years:)

The middle seat arrived as well and is nothing less either and to add to the delight, its in the same OG basket weave trim as the two front seats.

The RHD sliding door was brought in too. Overall its in great shape and comes complete with all the rollers, hinges, catches, locks, handles everything. However needs some repair at the bottom. Again no biggie, it would be fixed when the van goes for a body work. So all it needs at the moment is assembly and it would be hopefully in full working order.

The EMPI Trigger Shifter arrived with the lot too with another 5 dozen bits and was immediately put on because I really didn't feel comfortable driving around with the stock shifter which was rather lousy. I know its not the shifter but the worn bushings, which have already been ordered but EMPI would make the shifting a little better until the bushings arrive.

The uninstalled stock shifter with extension

Also came with all these Missionare bits the trike that I had bought for my son. This would keep him busy while I work on my cars Smile

PostSubject: Sliding Door Now Restored on Missionare   Mon Nov 11, 2013 9:35 am

Missionare's sliding door eventually put on, after donkey years, with all the latches/mechanism/catches/handles refreshed. Though its still missing the rear striker plate Sad

RHD specific rear striker plate hunt continues...

Plz excuse the mess inside the van as its being stripped slowly and steadily for a ground up. Smile

PostSubject: 45+ yrs Old OG VW Rubber, Cab Floor Mat   Thu Nov 28, 2013 11:42 am

Got one, eventually. And its OG VW Rubber from a chopped 69er. Not the perfect one as you can see, but better than a bare front cab floor. Will need replacing once Missionare is all welded up and restored. Will help maintain the overall character until then Very Happy

Picked these up from the same seller from whom picked up the tail gate hinge covers. Step rubbers are not perfect, but will do the job for now.

Used Slider End Trim & Upper Roller Cover (Both RHD specific) & front indicator seals (pair)

The cables; 2 of each, handbrake/throttle/clutch cables (RHD Specific)
